About the Festival
The Virginia Student Film Festival (VASfilm) is a student-run festival that seeks to celebrate and give a voice to student filmmaking at the undergraduate level. The festival was founded in 1997 by the Filmmakers’ Society (FMS), a CIO at the University of Virginia, as a means to showcase its members’ work.Over the years, the festival has fluctuated in its style and format, but has continued to grow in sophistication and success. FMS continues to play a large role in the festival, beginning with an election for the role of Festival Director. This year, FMS is thrilled to be teaming up with the University Program Council's Cinematheque to bring this festival to life.
The festival is open to undergraduate students enrolled in any university in the United States. Students can submit their films into 1 of 4 genres: narrative, documentary, experimental, and music video. Each genre is evaluated by panel of judges that have extensive experience in the film and television industry. There will be five awards given out at the festival: Best Narrative Film, Best Documentary, Best Experimental Film, Best Music Video, and an Audience Award.
